A piece of paper and a pen, an idea, several people around, “what if we could …”, discussions, jokes, scribbling, more words, bits of sentences, someone starts to formulate, “yes! write that down”, scratched through sentences, new lines, “can you read it now, aloud…?”
That’s how a WITPLAN (white plan) was born almost half a century ago. Next thing was to get a typewriter and to hammer the words in the waxed surface of a ‘paper stencil’ or use a pen or brush with a special etching ink to make a kind of paper printing plate. All this was two steps away from hitting the world with your plan. First the duplicating machine to churn out hundred or more leaflets. Next to go out in the streets and distribute the leaflets at a proper moment, which would be often a ceremonial gathering in the form of a street happening, whereby one had to make sure that some sympathizing journalists in the nearby cafe would get their personal copy, to increase the chances for posterity.

This new weblog WITPLAN offers another kind of meeting point for ‘white plans’ in the 21st. century. White plans in which means and ends are of the same order: social use of the liberating potentials of technology combined with the joy of sharing. This blog is not longing for the past but has a nostalgia for utopia, projecting the liberating spirits from the past upon the future.

Papier en pen, een idee, een aantal mensen, “als we nu eens…”, discussies, grappen, gekrabbel, meer woorden, flarden van zinnen, iemand begint iets te formuleren, “ja! schrijft dat op”, doorgestreepte zinnen, nieuwe regels, “kun je het nu hardop voorlezen…?”
Dat is hoe een WITPLAN geboren werd nu bijna een halve eeuw geleden in de twintigste eeuw. Het volgende was een tikmachine om de woorden in het waslaagje van een stencil te hameren of een pen of kwast met een speicale etsende inkt te gebruiken om een soort papieren drukplaat te maken. Dit alles was twee stappen weg van het raken van de wereld met je plan. Eerst een stencilmachine om honderd of meer pamlfetten uit te draaien. Vervolgens de straat op gaan om de pamfletten op een geschikt moment te verspreiden, iets wat vaak een ceremonieel bijeenkomen tijdens een straathappening was, waarbij je jezelf ervan moest vergewissen dat een sympathiserende journalist in een nabij café z’n persoonlijk exemplaar kreeg, om de kansen om herinnerd te worden door het nageslcht te vergroten.
Dit nieuwe webblog WITPLAN biedt een ander soort ontmoetingspunt voor ‘witte plannen’ in de 21ste eeuw. Witplannen waar doel en middel van dezelfde orde zijn: social gebruik van de bevrijdende mogelijkheden van technologie, gecombineerd met het plezier van iets samen te delen. Dit blog verlangt niet naar het verleden, maar heeft een nostalgie voor de utopie, de bevrijdende ideeën uit het verleden projecterend op de toekomst.
